Course Summary
Lesson 1: We will explore some answers to the question, “What is art?”
Lesson 2: We will look at the basic elements of art: line, shape and form, mass and volume, color, value, and texture.
Lesson 3: We will study how the elements of art are put together to form the principles of design.
Lesson 4: We will look at the circumstances within which art is created. Context can involve the physical environment that the art was created in or even the artist’s state of mind.
Lesson 5: This lesson will be a review for the midterm exam.
Lesson 6: We begin studying art history with a look at the earliest art. Then we will examine one of the four aspects of art history: interpretation. By looking at the facts of how and when an artwork has been made, we can begin to figure out what the meaning of that art is.
Lesson 7: In our study of art history, we’ll skip to the modern era, where we will study three well-known artists: Mary Cassatt, Jacob Lawrence, and Henry Moore. You will learn a little of their background and of the people and things that influenced them as artists.
Lesson 8: We will study the Gothic era through the Rococo era, and conclude with an overview of the Western art studied in lessons 6–8. You will learn the names of well known Western artists, art movements, and differences between Western and non-Western art.
Lesson 9: This lesson teaches the basic techniques for critiquing a work of art using the methods of describing, analyzing, interpreting, and judging an artwork.
Lesson 10: This lesson is a review for the final exam.
